Gitxsan hereditary chiefs voted at a meeting in Hagwilget, B.C., Tuesday evening to reject the deal that would have given the First Nation $7 million in profits over 30 years.

Gitxsan: Lone B.C. chief backs Enbridge pipeline amid overwhelming opposition - Hereditary Chief Elmer Derrick, a negotiator with the Gitxsan Treaty Office, announced that the first nation decided to take an ownership stake in the pipeline. Derrick said aboriginal rights and titles issues must be resolved as part of any pipeline development, but the agreement he signed with Enbridge represents an economic opportunity for his people.
