Skokomish: Potlatch Waste Water Treatment Plant Update - The Skokomish Indian Tribe�s Community Development Director, Lennea Wolfe gave an update of the Potlatch Waste Water Treatment Plant, complete with pictures. The Potlatch Plant will use Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology to treat waste water.

Skokomish: Students, elders check out Tribe's work - The tribe has worked to restore the 400-acre estuary at the mouth of the Skokomish River through the removal of fish-blocking culverts and dikes, installation of woody debris and re-vegetation of native plants.
Skokomish: Mason County Jail Inmate Commits Suicide - Mason County Sheriff Jail Officers found that an inmate had hanged himself. Coroner Wes Stockwell made the family notifications and identified the inmate as 27 year old Native American male, Jimi Lee Johnson. Jimi Johnson was a Skokomish Indian Nation Tribal member.

Skokomish: Cantwell names Mary Pavel of Skokomish Tribe to Committee on Indian Affairs staff director job - Sen. Maria Cantwell, a Washington Democrat who is taking over the chairmanship of the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, today named a Washington native as the committee's staff director. Mary J. Pavel, a member of the Skokomish Tribe, is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Law.

Skokomish: Prairie Restoration Prescribed Burn Possible - If conditions are favorable in the next few weeks, fire managers from Olympic National Forest will begin a prairie restoration project on the Hood Canal Ranger District where a 32-acre prescribed fire to restore the historic prairie ecosystem is planned in the vicinity of the 2340-140 Road. Resources expected to assist with this prescribed fire include three engines, ten firefighters, and numerous support personnel. Cooperators include the Skokomish Tribe, Olympic National Park, and the Center for Natural Lands Management.

Skokomish: Hopes of boosting Skokomish River steelhead in the works by Skokomish Tribe and other groups - The Skokomish Tribe is wrapping up the first five years of an intensive 16-year study to enhance steelhead populations in Hood Canal rivers. Puget Sound steelhead are listed as "threatened" under the federal Endangered Species Act, the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission reported in a news release.

Skokomish: Hood Canal 'partners' honored for conservation efforts - Four groups working on environmental preservation and restoration in the Hood Canal region have been named "Puget Sound champions" by the Puget Sound Partnership. These include the Skokomish Tribe and Mason Conservation District for restoration of the Skokomish River estuary by removing 3 miles of dikes and reopening tidal channels across 500 acres of saltwater wetlands.

Potlatch Waste Water Plant Ground Breaking - The Skokomish Tribe had their official ground breaking ceremony for the Potlatch Waste Water Treatment Plant grounds on Wednesday. There was an opening blessing and then Charles 'Guy' Miller, Chairman for the Tribe spoke on how the tribe is thrilled to play a role in keeping Hood Canal clean for generations to come.

Skokomish: MTA Special Meeting Apr 26 - A Special Meeting has been called by the Mason County Transportation Authority Board for the purpose of considering action on a Memorandum of Understanding with the Skokomish Indian Tribe for a transportation pilot project. The Special Meeting is scheduled to be held on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Mason Transit�s Business Office located at 790 E Johns Prairie Road, Shelton, WA.

Skokomish: Skokomish River Ecosystem Restoration - Mason County Public Works, Mason County Conservation District, Skokomish Indian Tribe and the US Army Corps of Engineers met with several dozen Skokomish River landowners last night in Shelton to discuss the Skokomish River Ecosystem Restoration Plan. Nic Scott of KMAS News Radio, talked with Rich Geiger of the Conservation District who says as many as 200 homeowners in the Skokomish Valley are effected.
Skokomish Tribe/Mason County Wastewater and Reclamation Facilities Project - In 2006, The Skokomish Tribe entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Mason County and Mason PUD #1, forming the Tri-Party Consortium for the purpose of designing, permitting and constructing a series of three MBR wastewater treatment plants consistent with the July 2007 Skokomish Reservation Wastewater Facility Plan.

Skokomish: Deputies Investigating New Years Day Stabbing - Mason County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a stabbing that occurred during the early morning hours of New Years Day on the Skokomish Indian Reservation. Deputies found a significant amount of blood at the scene. The investigation disclosed that a fight had broken out at the party and during the altercation a knife was introduced. During the altercation two people were stabbed. The victims are described as a 20 year old male from Shelton and a 19 year old female from Shelton. Both victims were treated and released at Mason General Hospital. Investigators have been able to identify a person of interest. Detectives are continuing the investigation and expect to make an arrest soon.
Port Gamble S�Klallam-Skokomish: Eco-projects on Puget Sound get federal funding - Twenty-three projects to protect and restore Puget Sound have been awarded a total of $6.3 million in federal grants. Among the projects are two to be overseen by the Hood Canal Coordinating Council. The council, which includes the Port Gamble S�Klallam and Skokomish tribes, received $550,000 for the two projects. It received $300,000 to complete an integrated watershed management plan for mitigation program and $250,000 for a regional stormwater retrofit plan.

Skokomish: Thurston, Mason counties get $2 million for salmon recovery - Thirteen salmon recovery projects valued at more than $2 million in Thurston and Mason counties have received state and federal funding to proceed, including $326,139 to the Skokomish Indian Tribe to help remove barriers to fish passage in the Skokomish River estuary, which has been the scene of a major estuary restoration project.
