Upper Skagit: Can New Investors Reboot Semiahmoo Resort In Blaine? - On December 1st, 2012, the Semiahmoo Resort closed its doors after the Upper Skagit Indian Tribe was unable to find a buyer to take over the failing hotel and golf resort. Six month later, a new ownership group made up of Resort Semiahmoo and Wright Hotels, Inc., has purchased the property for $19.5M and hopes to do for it what they did for Cedarbrook Lodge near Sea-Tac last year.

Upper Skagit: Deal to buy and reopen Semiahmoo Hotel may be near - Seattle-based Coastal Hotel Group has posted two job openings at the Semiahmoo Resort, raising hopes that a deal for the sale and reopening of the Semiahmoo Hotel may be complete soon.

Upper Skagit: Possible Semiahmoo sale still in works - Employees at Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club and Loomis Trail Golf Club have been told their jobs are safe through May 30, as negotiations continue on a possible sale of the golf courses and the closed-down Semiahmoo Hotel.

Upper Skagit: PSE Completes Second Fish Collector to Further Aid Baker River Sockeye - �Salmon are important to our tribe both culturally and economically,� said Scott Schuyler, natural resources director for the Upper Skagit Tribe. �We�re thrilled by the increase in sockeye returns we�ve seen from Puget Sound Energy�s first floating surface collector and the utility�s other collaborative fisheries projects. We�re hoping for even greater sockeye runs now that the Lower Baker FSC is coming online.�

Upper Skagit: Another possible buyer emerges for Semiahmoo Hotel, golf courses - A sale is pending, once again, for the Semiahmoo Hotel and two nearby golf courses.

Upper Skagit: Expanding elk herds run into trouble - As the elk population continues to grow in Skagit and Whatcom counties, farmers are complaining more and more about the damage the animals cause to crops and livestock. Overall, the estimated 1,000 elk in the Nooksack herd range from Whatcom County to Darrington � and state Department of Fish and Wildlife officials have said they want to nearly double that number to 1,900. Scott Schuyler, natural-resources policy representative for the Upper Skagit tribe, said elk have been here for thousands of years.

Upper Skagit: Semiahmoo Hotel shutdown ends 200 jobs - Semiahmoo Resort Co. has announced the Dec. 1 shutdown of the Semiahmoo Hotel, putting more than 200 people out of work. The Upper Skagit Indian Tribe is majority owner of the hotel. Harry Chesnin, a tribal attorney, said the tribe would continue to try to find a buyer for the hotel. �We still want to pursue that avenue, and we�re hopeful that something will be worked out in that respect,� Chesnin said. �We�ve been trying to sell the operation for some time.�

Skagit: Chief Snakelum canoe restoration to begin - The project began on Feb. 6 with the relocation of the canoe and will cost $10,000, according to museum Executive Director Rick Castellano. According to the (Island County Historical Society Museum), the canoe is the oldest remaining dugout in Puget Sound with authentic records. Sam Wick of the Skagit tribe built it in the 1850s.
